Psoriasis Psoriasis is a genetic problem where the skin has a "short circuit" in the way it is made. Psoriasis causes the skin to start reproducing much faster than normal at unpredictable, random sites. Because of this, the skin thickens with heavy white scale on a red base. The area can itch or burn and can often bleed due to blood vessels developing closer to the surface than normal.
Psoriasis is probably one of the most unpredictable skin diseases I deal with. The most likely sites of involvement are the elbows, knees, scalp, sacrum, buttocks and nails, however any surface can be involved. Most patients are worse in the winter because sunlight helps prevent the excessive reproduction of the skin cells.
