Scars Scars can be a difficult area of treatment for both the physician and the patient. Scars are an abnormal growth of tissue, sometimes simply excessive (the hypertrophic scar), or extremely exuberant (the keloidal scar). There are also depressed scars, otherwise referred to as "pits."
Scars can develop from acne, chickenpox, shingles, wounds and the fortunately eradicated smallpox. Use of topical agents may help resolve or improve the appearance of some forms of scars.
