Stretch Marks  Stretch marks develop as the skin is literally stretched from rapid expansion. The most common process associated with stretch mark development is pregnancy, however, a large number of teenagers may develop stretch marks if they have a rapid growth spurt. Not only will stretch marks develop on the abdomen, as seen with pregnancy, they can also arise on the hips, buttocks, shoulders and thighs.
New stretch marks are usually somewhat reddish in color and raised. As they age, they become finer in appearance, lighter in color than the rest of the skin and often depressed (atrophic). Sometimes stretch marks will fade away on their own, and this is especially true for those teens who have had a growth spurt.
